I have learned to repair using Famowood filler, if there is a gouge and stains, along with artist's acrylic paints to match color and grain, using various artist's brushes. I can only talk as a cabinetmaker who has a bunch of repair work to do on high-end entry doors for a major door manufacturer.

So this has been a learn experience all the way around. Is there something I am missing? I primarily a wood turner where my finishes are extremely simple. I have use the paint color matching facilities at the local HD stores. I was wondering if anyone here had any other ideas? I figure as a result I am going to have to start mixing the various elements trying to create the right color. Luckily I started with test pieces instead of my gate! Too be honest most of them aren't even close. I have purchased a dozen little cans trying to get the right color. However, and there is where it gets annoying, matching the stain used on the railing and other elements of my house (baseboards and sills etc.) has proven impossible. I made one that matches in design and is constructed of good quality woods.
I wanted a real one instead of a cheap plastic thing. I have been building a baby gate for our stairwell.
